B WS Batting Win Shares Batting Win Shares earned at specified position in specified league during specified
season. Note that this figure is not always an exact positional split of total Batting Win
Shares earned, but rather a close estimate.
F WS Fielding Win Shares Fielding Win Shares earned at specified position in specified league during specified
season. Note that this figure is not always an exact positional split of total Fielding
Win Shares earned, but rather a close estimate.
T WS Total Win Shares Sum of batting and fielding Win Shares earned at specified position in specified league
during specified season.
BWS/G Batting Win Shares per Game Batting Win Shares earned at specified position in specified league during specified
season divided by games played at specified position in specified league during specified
season.
Bolded figure indicates league leader at specified position in specified league. This
figure, rather than the Batting Win Shares leader, is considered the pro-forma "Silver
Slugger" winner for Baseball by Positions. Batting Win Shares per Game better measures
offensive effectiveness, the ideal criterion for Silver Slugger winners.
The minimum qualification for leadership is playing at the specifed position in at least
50% of the scheduled games (games played in shortened seasons). This ensures that the
winner played a substantial portion of the season at the specified position.
An exception is made for exceptional performances. A player can win playing in fewer than
the minimum 50% of games scheduled. His Batting Win Shares per Game must be a greater
percentage above the BWS/G of the highest ranked qualifier than his percentage of games
is less than the minimum games played required to qualify for leadership.
For example - .175 (70 games in 162 game schedule) vs. .150 (leading qualifier)
(.175-.150)/.150 = .1667         (81-70)/(162/2) = 11/81 = .1358         .1667 > .1358
FWS/G Fielding Win Shares per Game Fielding Win Shares earned at specified position in specified league during specified
season divided by games played at specified position in specified league during specified
season.
Bolded figure indicates league leader at specified position in specified league. This
figure, rather than the Fielding Win Shares leader, is considered the pro-forma "Golden
Glove" winner for Baseball by Positions. Fielding Win Shares per Game better measures
defensive effectiveness, the ideal criterion for Golden Glove winners.
His Fielding Win Shares per Game must be a greater
percentage above the FWS/G of the highest ranked qualifier than his percentage of games
is less than the minimum games played required to qualify for leadership.
For example - .070 (70 games in 162 game schedule) vs. .060 (leading qualifier)
(.070-.060)/.060 = .1667         (81-70)/(162/2) = 11/81 = .1358         .1667 > .1358
(Note: Rafael Palmeiro won the 1999 American League Golden Glove Award for First Base
playing only 28 games at that position. The methodology described above assures that such
an event cannot happen, except for extraordinary performances, in the Baseball by
Positions tables.)
TWS/G Total Win Shares per Game Total Win Shares earned at specified position in specified league during specified
season divided by games played at specified position in specified league during specified
season. Note that due to rounding the batting Win Shares per game plus the fielding Win
Shares per game may not equal the total Win Shares per game.
WSQ Win Shares Quotient The final calculation used to rate players, the player's total Win Shares times the factor
of the square root of his Win Shares per game divided by the league average total Win
Shares per game (see below). This quotient thus accounts for both total production (Win
Shares) and pro-rated production (Win Shares per game). The square root is used to modify
the Win Shares per game factor, ensuring that Win Shares carries the heavier weight in
the calculation.
League Average Age Age per game as calculated by weighted average of player's ages times games played divided
by games played.
League Average per x Chances Average of fielding statistics per x number of chances. Fielding percentage is calculated
on the sum of all putouts, assists and errors. "x" is based on a typical full season in
the modern era for each fielding position, rounded to the nearest hundred chances. For
each position, "x" is -
Catcher      800       Second Base 800        Shortstop   700         Center Field  400
First Base  1500       Third Base  400        Left Field  300         Right Field   300
League Average per 600 PA Average of batting statistics per 600 plate appearances. Batting average, on base average
and slugging average are calculated on the sum of all at bats, bases on balls, hit by
pitches, sacrifice hits and sacrifice flies.
League Avg WS/G Average of batting, fielding and total Win Shares per game based on the sum of batting,
fielding and total Win Shares. Note that due to rounding the batting Win Shares per game
plus the fielding Win Shares per game may not equal the total Win Shares per game.
Offense Share of WS Sum of batting Win Shares divided by sum of total Win Shares.
Average WS/Team Sum of total Win Shares divided by number of teams in league for specified season. Note
that due to the 20 game minimum requirement, this figure does not represent all of the
Win Shares earned by a given team for that position, but rather the Win Shares earned by
those players who qualified for the table.
